After smugglers on August 10 forced 180 African migrants off boats in the middle of the water on their way to Yemen, at least 5 drowned and 50 were missing. The smugglers were trying to avoid being arrested. A similar incident on August 9, in which smugglers forced more than 120 Somali and Ethiopian migrants off boats, killed at least 50 and left 22 missing. Despite the brutal war in Yemen, migrants from Africa continue to make the journey to the country to reach the wealthy and stable countries of the Gulf. The International Organization for Migration estimates that 55,000 migrants have left Africa for Yemen so far in 2017.
