Alibaba Group, one of the world's largest e-commerce businesses, has had stellar sales performance for Singles' Day 2017. After raking in a massive $1.5 billion in the first three minutes, sales continued to soar to $12 billion in two hours and then onto $18 billion after 13 hours.

It seems that Alibaba has booked over $25 billion in sales for this years Singles Day online shopping day that has always rivaled Black Friday and Cyber Monday here in the United States.

There's no direct comparison but the figure is a touch above Alibaba's 2016 11/11 sales GMV of RMB 120.7 billion. The figure is also higher than the $17.6 billion that JD.com grossed for its own 6/18 sales event -- which commemorates the date of its founding -- although that bonanza lasts for 18 days rather than just one like Single's Day.

The full number comes in at 163.8 billion RMB, that's roughly $25.4 billion, in GMV -- that's "gross merchandise volume" which is used to measure a dollar value for all sales on a platform. In Alibaba's case, that predominantly means its Taobao marketplace and Tmall brand store although it does offer sales via its international services and it ships worldwide.
