The arrest of the two Myanmar journalists, whose trial begins Wednesday, caused an international outcry. After they were detained, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the arrests showed how press freedom was deteriorating in Myanmar, while U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called for their immediate release. Reuters President and Editor-in-Chief Stephen J. Adler also has called on Myanmar to free the journalists.
