China Shuts Down Marriott's Website and Mobile App Over Tibet Gaffe

Marriott's Chinese website and mobile app are being shut down temporarily at the request of Chinese government officials in Shanghai as punishment for the company listing Chinese-claimed regions Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan as countries in a recent Mandarin-language customer survey sent to Marriott loyalty members.

Delta and Zara, however, are not the only companies to be publicly scolded by China this week. The Marriott hotel chain had its website and app blocked yesterday for a similar political misstep. It listed Hong Kong, Tibet, Taiwan and Macau as separate "countries" in its emails and mobile app, suffering the consequences with a week-long ban.

Foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a regular briefing on Friday that Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Tibet were all part of China. He added that the minimum requirement of any company conducting business in the country was "to respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, abide by China's laws, and respect the feelings of the Chinese people."
